Perched atop a hill, some ten kilometres from the motorway, Castillon du Gard is an ideal starting place from where to explore the
Gard, especially Nîmes and
Uzès, and Provence
. The village retains many remnants from its rich past – you can discover some of the walls of the old ramparts, the ancient
watch tower, cobbled streets, a windmill, a Romanesque chapel and the century-old olive trees on the main square. Nature lovers can go
for breathtaking hikes in the Gorges du Gardon or, a bit further away, in the Cévennes or on
Mont Ventoux
